What Is Premium Financing?
Premium financing is a strategy in which a third-party lender — typically a bank or specialty finance company — funds the premiums on a large permanent life insurance policy, with the policy itself (and often other collateral) serving as security. The policyholder pays interest on the loan, which is typically lower than the cost of paying premiums out of pocket. If the policy's cash value grows at a rate exceeding the loan interest, positive arbitrage is created. Premium financing is used primarily by high-net-worth individuals who want to preserve liquidity while obtaining significant permanent coverage. It is a complex strategy with substantial risks including collateral calls if policy performance lags projections.
Nevada Context
Premium financing arrangements in Nevada are subject to both insurance and banking regulations. Nevada consumers considering premium financing should work with an experienced estate planning attorney and a licensed agent who understands the strategy's risks.
How It Affects You
Premium financing can allow access to substantial life insurance coverage without large out-of-pocket premiums. However, if the policy underperforms or interest rates rise, you may face collateral calls or the need to repay the loan from personal assets.
Premium Financing in Practice
A Nevada real estate developer finances premiums on an illustrative $5,000,000 IUL policy through a bank loan at 6% annual interest; if the IUL credits 8–10% annually, the policy's growth exceeds the loan cost, creating favorable arbitrage for his estate plan.
