The different categories and structures of life insurance products.

Definition

What Is Stock Insurance Company?

A stock insurance company is an insurer owned by external shareholders — investors who purchase equity in the company. Unlike mutual companies (owned by policyholders), stock companies are accountable to shareholders and may pay dividends to shareholders from company profits. Stock companies do not issue participating policies with policyholder dividends in the same way mutual companies do, though some offer non-participating policies with guaranteed values. Many of the largest and best-known insurance companies in the United States are stock companies. Stock companies can access capital markets for growth but must balance policyholder and shareholder interests.

Nevada Context

Both mutual and stock life insurance companies operate in Nevada, all subject to the same state insurance regulations. Nevada consumers can find A-rated (A.M. Best) stock and mutual carriers among the options available through agents in our network.

How It Affects You

Whether a carrier is structured as a stock or mutual company matters primarily for dividend potential. If participating policyholder dividends are important to your strategy, mutual companies are the relevant category. For non-participating products, the distinction is less significant.

Real-World Example

Stock Insurance Company in Practice

A Nevada policyholder purchases a guaranteed universal life policy from an A-rated (A.M. Best) stock company; he receives no policyholder dividends — only guaranteed values — but benefits from the company's strong capitalization and financial stability.
