Definition

What Is Underwriting?

Underwriting is the process by which an insurance company evaluates an applicant's risk profile to determine whether to offer coverage, at what premium, and on what terms. Life insurance underwriting analyzes medical history, current health, family history, height and weight, tobacco use, occupation, hobbies, motor vehicle records, and financial information. Underwriters use this information along with actuarial mortality tables to assign a risk classification — preferred, standard, or substandard — and set the appropriate premium. The underwriting process may include a medical exam, blood and urine tests, attending physician statements, prescription database checks, and MIB report review. Accelerated underwriting programs use algorithmic models to issue decisions without a medical exam.

Nevada Context

Nevada insurers use a combination of traditional and accelerated underwriting programs. Nevada's large retiree population means many carriers have specific underwriting programs tailored to applicants aged 55–70 applying for permanent coverage.

How It Affects You

Your underwriting outcome — which risk class you are assigned — directly determines your premium. Preparing for underwriting by gathering your medical history, knowing your prescriptions, and being completely honest on your application will support the best possible outcome.

Real-World Example

Underwriting in Practice

A 52-year-old Nevada applicant submits to a paramedical exam, answers health questions, and provides consent for prescription and MIB checks; after 3 weeks, the carrier issues her a Preferred Plus classification — the best available — for her illustrative $750,000 whole life policy.

Dollar amounts shown are illustrative. Actual amounts vary by carrier, applicant age, health status, and individual underwriting.
